The Biochemistry of the Nitrifying Organisms 4. THE RESPIRATION AND INTERMEDIARY METABOLISM OF NITROSOMONAS BY T. HOFMAN

چکیده
Meyerhof (1917) found that the oxygen uptake of suspensions of the organism provided with ammonia agreed well with nitrite production in the suspensions. Bomecke (1939) established that the organisms had an oxygen uptake in the absence of ammonia; however, this endogenous respiration is very small and, although ofconsiderable biochemical significance, is quantitatively negligible in ordinary respirometric studies in the presence of appreciable quantities of ammonia. The respiration of Nitrosomonas suspensions thus offers a very simple means of studying the metabolism of the organism since there is only one normal substrate and one end product; nevertheless, the studies of Meyerhof (1917) and B6mecke (1939, 1951) represent the bulk of the work that has been published in this field. Effect of exogenous corticosterone on respiration in a reptile.
Release of glucocorticoids (GCs) enables organisms to meet energy requirements during stressful situations by regulating intermediary metabolism. In the absence of compensatory mechanisms, increased metabolic activity (e.g., protein catabolism, lipolysis, and gluconeogenesis) should translate to increases in whole animal metabolism, and therefore energy expenditures, by organisms. However, to o...
متن کاملMetabolic Trade-offs in Yeast are Caused by F1F0-ATP synthase.
Intermediary metabolism provides living cells with free energy and precursor metabolites required for synthesizing proteins, lipids, RNA and other cellular constituents, and it is highly conserved among living species. Only a fraction of cellular protein can, however, be allocated to enzymes of intermediary metabolism and consequently metabolic trade-offs may take place. One such trade-off, aer...

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a deadly infectious disease despite all the efforts to reduce its incidence. Spread of multidrug resistant TB has seriously undermined the efforts to control the disease globally. In this study protein expression profile of MDR and sensitive isolates of MTB were analyzed and compared in order to identify proteins, which could be used in prevention, diagno...
متن کاملRegulation of redox metabolism in the mouse oocyte and embryo.
Energy homeostasis of the oocyte is a crucial determinant of fertility. Following ovulation, the oocyte is exposed to the unique environment of the Fallopian tube, and this is reflected in a highly specialised biochemistry. The minute amounts of tissue available have made the physiological analysis of oocyte intermediary metabolism almost impossible. We have therefore used confocal imaging of m...

The inhibition of hexokinase (Meyerhof and Wilson, 1948), choline oxidase (Goldfinger et al., 1947), and other enzyme systems by urethan and related carbamates has been studied extensively. Yet precisely how these compounds exert their physiological effects is unknown. Warburg (1921) considered urethan to be an "indifferent" narcotic, blocking dehydrogenases by nonspecific absorption on cellula...
